What a "forced redirect" actually is
Some ad networks don't just show a banner — they hijack the tab itself. You tap anywhere on a page (sometimes anywhere at all, thanks to an invisible full-page overlay) and instead of what you expected, you land on a fake "you've won a prize" page, a scareware warning, or an app-store listing you never asked for. A close cousin is the pop-under: a new window opens behind your current tab that you don't notice until later.
How DNDShield's redirect protection works
DNDShield runs a small guard script directly on the page, early enough to act before most ad scripts get a chance to run. It watches for exactly two things:
- Was this a real click? Genuine navigation — clicking a link, submitting a form, opening a login popup — happens right after you interact with the page. DNDShield tracks that "user activation" window and only intervenes on windows/redirects that fire without it, which is the signature of a forced redirect.
- Is the destination a known ad/redirect network? Even during a real interaction, DNDShield checks the destination against a list of domains known for pop-under and forced-redirect abuse, and blocks those specifically — so a page can't smuggle a redirect through by attaching it to an unrelated click.
When a redirect attempt is blocked, DNDShield swaps in a harmless placeholder so the ad script's own follow-up code (things like .focus() or checking "did my window open?") doesn't error out or fall back to hijacking your current tab instead.
Why this is safe to leave on
- No new permissions. This runs using access the extension already has to render its ad-blocking features — turning on redirect protection doesn't prompt for anything extra.
- Nothing leaves your browser. The check against known ad-redirect hosts happens locally, on the page, in real time. No log of blocked redirects or visited sites is sent anywhere for this feature.
- Real windows still work. Because the guard only blocks gesture-less or known-malicious windows, an OAuth login popup, a payment provider's checkout window, or a "Share to..." dialog opens exactly as normal.
- It's on by default, and free. You don't need a paid plan for this one — it's part of DNDShield's base protection.
